I believe that mental health counseling can help an individual experience positive changes and growth at any age or stage in life - adulthood, adolescence or childhood. I also believe that individuals already possess the resources they need to live a peaceful and balanced life.
I work with adults, adolescents and children experiencing anxiety, depression, stress, life transitions such as divorce, adjustments to various life situations, childhood behavior or academic difficulties, parenting challenges, relationship issues, as well as any other situations that are causing life to be less than fulfilling.
My treatment approach for all individuals is practical, short-term and solution-focused. The first few sessions will be spent gathering information and setting goals. The remaining sessions will be aimed at discovering strengths and monitoring progress to help you or your child reach those goals. This is a collaborative process, so expect to be engaged. Sometimes a referral to another professional is appropriate and necessary to achieve certain goals. We will make that determination together.
I use assessments as necessary. I also consult with other professionals, such as doctors or school personnel, to coordinate the best possible treatment for you or your child. School observations are available on request.
Adolescents' and children's needs are different from adults' needs in counseling and, for treatment to be effective, the approach must be developmentally appropriate. My past experience as a teacher and school counselor allows me to have a keen understanding of the challenges that students and families may face.
Adolescents are in the midst of tremendous developmental changes - physically, emotionally, intellectually, and socially. Added to the normal problems that exist in school and in families, these changes can cause a higher level of stress for everyone involved. This combination can result in difficulties with family and peer relationships and academic achievement. Establishing a trusting relationship with a counselor who understands the needs of adolescents and their parents can be very helpful during this challenging stage of life.
For young children, play therapy is the treatment of choice. Click on that tab to learn more about it.
